Taking their name from a table football bar in Brno in the Czech Republic that the band haunted for the whole of a fateful holiday, Bastila are on the cusp of taking their horn-infused party-romping music to the next level. They signed to Rob da Bank's Sunday Best label after winning a best local band competition giving them the opening slot, kicking off the main stage at Bestival 2006 and suitably impressing the governor.
The original core of the band – Adam Clark on guitar, Pat Dignan on drums and Cody Entwhistle on bass – grew up in the Shanklin/Ventnor area on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. They came together initially as schoolmates at Sandown High, recruiting another schoolmate, Kevin Ledger, on trumpet along the way before enlisting vocalist, Christopher Turvey after a chance meeting in a pub.
Produced by erstwhile Ride front-man Mark Gardener and taken from the forthcoming eponymous album, the band's debut single 'The Slacker' is a horn-powered, gypsy-flecked stomping skank that immediately captures the imagination with its high-octane urgency. Non-album track 'We All Died' adds shade to 'The Slacker's light, upping the epic ante with suggestions of psychedelic 60s flavours. Finally the Sunday Best Nu-Polka remix takes 'The Slacker' and boots it on to the dancefloor with skipping kicks and wobbling bass.
With influences as diverse as The Stone Roses, The Beta Band, and Gomez, Bastila are all about their invigorating, barnstorming live shows but anyone who hears both Slacker and the forthcoming album will realise they've done a blinding job capturing that sizzling energy in the studio.
